Impact

Several enzymes, proteolytic, lipolytic, amylase and chitinase have been reported from B. bassiana. These enable the hydrolysis of the protein-chitin of the integument. Several toxins from the fungus have been shown to have an antibacterial effect which serves to reduce bacterial competition during the saprophytic phase of growth on the host cadaver. B. bassiana has been tested experimentally and used on a large scale, with or without added insecticide, against a wide range of insect pests on a variety of crops. There is extensive literature on this work. Some report synergistic effects with the insecticides. Large scale production of conidia in submerged culture was developed in the former USSR. The liquid culture is poured onto bran or cereal grains to encourage sporulation. It is then conserved in an inert kaolin carrier, the preparation being known as 'beauverin' or 'boverin'. Low temperature storage is recommended between harvesting and use. Cultures are available from all major Culture Collections.
