A new series set in the world of Orphan Black, which followed a group of women who discovered they were human clones, was first rumoured in 2019. Orphan Black ran for five seasons on Space (now CTV Sci-Fi Channel) in Canada and BBC America in the U.S., produced under the Temple Street banner. Temple Street was folded into Boat Rocker Studios at the end of 2020 as part of their scripted division, with Kerry Appleyard named as SVP, creative affairs.

Maslany earned three Emmy nominations and one win for her work playing multiple clones throughout the series. She reprised her roles in an original podcast, titled Orphan Black: The Next Chapter.
