    Description
    Global description

Potamogeton nodosus is an aquatic vivacious plant with long slender rhizomes, with floating leaves and small emerged spikes. The stems bear leaves of two kinds: submerged, reduced to an elongated thin blade; floating leaves with very long petiole, flourished in developed ovate blade. The inflorescence is a spike emerging 3 to 5 cm long, surrounded by a basal sheath.

    First leaves

The seedlings can come from the fragmentation of rhizomes from mother plants or seeds. First leaves simple, alternate, carried by a petiole of 1 to 5 cm long or more, depending on water depth. The first leaf has a blade elliptical at the top and wedged at the base, 1.5 to 2 cm long and 7 to 10 mm wide, reddish green in colour. The second leaf has a blade reaching 2 to 3 cm long and 1 to 1.5 cm wide. The leaves are fitted with long lanceolate stipules of 1 cm.

    General habit

Vivacious plant with long slender rhizomes and floating leaves, forming a mat on the surface of the water.

    Underground system

Simple or branched roots from the nodes. Rhizomes slender, developed and branched, internodes more or less long.

    Stem

Stem is cylindrical, slender, glabrous, more or less elongated depending on the water depth and extensively branched.

    Leaf

Simple, alternate leaves; terminal leaves are opposite. They have two types of morphology. Submerged leaves (in deep water) are reduced to an elongated thin blade, widely linear of 20 cm long and 4 cm wide and translucent. They are carried by a long stalk at its base with a pair of long oblong stipules. Floating leaves are carried by a long convex petiole above and has long lanceolate stipules. The blade is leathery, oval to elliptical, 15-25 cm long and 6-10 cm wide. The apex and base of the blade are wedged, the margin is whole and both sides are glabrous. The upper side is marked by numerous parallel arcuate ribs.

    Inflorescence

Inflorescence consists of a simple, cylindrical, emerged and erect spike, of 3 to 5 cm long, carried by a long peduncle often thicker than the stem. The flowers are small, consisting of 4 concave scales, 4 stamens and 2 to 4 free ovoid carpels, 3.5 mm long and 2.5 mm wide, keeled and topped with a slightly curved bill.

    Fruit

The fruit is a small drupe, ovoid, indehiscent, 3.5 mm long and 2.5 mm wide, containing a single seed.

    Seed

    One seed per drupe.

        Reproduction

Potamogeton nodosus is a vivacious aquatic plant that spreads by rhizomes rich in reserve or by seed. Its spread is favored by tillage of rice fields during the dry season. The plant tolerates long drying of rice fields and grows quickly after puddling and installation of culture.

In Mauritius and Reunion, Potamogeton thunbergii Cham. & Schlechtd., native species of ponds and estuaries of calm rivers resembles P. nodosus. It is essentially differentiated by its smaller leaves.

Madagascar: Potamogeton nodosus is a common aquatic plant on the shallows, on the highlands between 800 m and 1500 m altitude. It settled in lowland rice fields, ponds and swamps. On the highlands of Madagascar, P. nodosus develops rapidly to cover the surface of the water after rice transplanting. It grows on all mineral hydromorphic soils or more or less organic, of variable fertility. It tolerates many sunny rice fields or temporarily shaded by trees.

Mayotte: Potamogeton nodosus is an indigenous species present along a river of Grande Terre.
            Reunion: Absent.

                Global harmfulness

Once established, Potamogeton nodosus tends to form a dense stand, forming a true continuous mat on the surface of the water. This weed is present at high abundance. It is virtually impossible to get rid of this weed by mechanical or manual means.

                Local harmfulness

                Comoros: Absent.
Madagascar: Potamogeton nodosus invades marshland rice or irrigated rice in semi-intensive farming with low fertilizer input, with low to medium frequency, but often with high abundance. Once installed, it tends to form a dense stand more or less continuous, forming a true continuous mat on the surface of the water. The fragility of the vegetative system makes mechanical or manual weeding inefficient, which contributes to the vegetative growth of the plant by fragmentation of rhizomes.
                Mauritius: Absent.
                Reunion: Absent.
Seychelles: It is not present in crops.

                  Local management

Madagascar: On the highlands of Madagascar, in irrigated or marshland rice cultivation, weeding Potamogeton nodosus with the rotary hoe is inefficient. Rice-fish farming is very effective if we can properly control the water supply of the rainy season in rice fields.
