    Global description

    Adult plant

Chamaeleon gummifer is a vivacious plant in rosette, from 5 to 20 cm in height, without stem, with swivelling root, powerful, with latex, poisonous. Leaves in rosette, remaining in place after drying, simple, oblong, 15-40 x 5-12 cm, pennatilobed, with 5-8 pairs of lobes themselves lobulated and with spiny tip, blade long attenuated in pseudo-petiole sheathing at the base. Inflorescence a large capitulum with florets all tubular, rose-purple, 4-7 cm in diameter, usually solitary. Involucre with several rows of linear-lanceolate bracts terminating in a strong apical spine and smaller lateral spines, covered with short, tight to long, web-like hairs. Florets all tubular 4-8 cm long terminating in 5 long linear lobes far exceeding the involucre of bracts. Achenes 7-12 x 1-2 cm, somewhat club-shaped, covered with bristles.

                    Toxicity

Chamaeleon gummifer is a toxic species for animals (sheep, goats). The odorous root contains a toxic principle, a diterpenic heteroside, the carboxy-atracyloside, which provokes a pronounced hypoglycemia, an elevation of the uremia, the creatinemia, the transaminases, while the rate of prothrombin falls. Death occurs rapidly by respiratory arrest. The treatment can only be symptomatic, and generally is ineffective. The root was employed during the Middle Ages by the Islamic-Berber kingdoms of the Maghreb in the political assassinations.
