Global description
Seedling
The cotyledons are subsessile, with a broadly oval leaf blade with a rounded, slightly emarginated apex and a broadly rounded base. The first leaves are simple, alternate and long-stalked. The first leaf has a triangular blade with a broadly rounded, subcordate base and a subentire margin barely marked by small points corresponding to the tips of the veins. 5 palmate veins are visible at the base of the blade.
Adult plant
Zehneria thwaitesii is a climbing herbaceous liana, from 1 to 5 m long. The stem is very slender, glabrous or sparsely hairy furrowed, and branched. The leaves are simple, alternate, carried by a petiole thin and glabrous from 2 to 4 cm. At the base of the petiole there is a slender simple tendril. The blade of 2 to 9 cm length and width is triangular to trilobate, sub-sagittate at the base. The lobes are lanceolate triangular, acuminate at the apex; the lateral lobes smaller than the central lobe. The upper surface is finely scabrous, the lower surface smooth, glabrous with a few hairs along the veins. The margin is entire and smooth to very finely denticulate, with small spikes at the end of the veins. 5 palmate veins are clearly visible at the base of the blade. Monoecious plant with distinct female and male flowers. The male inflorescences are axillary racemes of 1 to 5 flowers carried by fine pedicels of 1 to 2 cm, articulated at the top. Calyx campanulate of 5 sepals of 1 mm, corolla of 5 white petals of 2 to 3 mm oblong attenuated at the top with scattered hairs on the external side, 3 stamens and a pistilode. Female flowers solitary or by two, axillary, carried by a peduncle of 1 to 2 cm very fine, glabrous. The calyx and the corolla are similar to those of the male flowers. Presence of 3 white staminodes and a fusiform ovary, glabrous, surmounted by a straight style of 1 and at the top of which are 3 globular, bilobed stigmatic branches. The fruit is an oblong fusiform berry of 2.5 to 3 cm long, smooth, glabrous, attenuated at the apex, black, containing numerous seeds of 3x2 mm oblong, flattened, yellow.
