Global description
Cyperus podocarpus is an annual sedge of very variable size, between 15 and 40 cm high, with thin stems and little broadleaf grouped in clumps. The terminal inflorescence seems to be located towards the middle of the stem because one of the axillary bracts extends it vertically. Cylindrical spikelets are sessile grouped into bundles. Depending on the size of the plant, the inflorescence can be reduced to 1 or 2 spikelets. At maturity they are bent, golden or brown.
General habit
A slender, narrow-leaved annual plant that grows in tuft. Its size is very variable, between 15 and 40 cm high.
Underground system
Fasciculate roots.
Stem
The stem is thin with a triangular section, 15 to 40 cm high.
Leaf
The leaves are few, they are thin and narrow. The blade slightly exceeds the inflorescence. He is hairless and acute at the top.
Inflorescence
The terminal inflorescence is located in the axil of 2 to 3 erect leafy bracts. The longer one extends the stem vertically, giving the impression that the inflorescence is inserted towards the middle of the axis. The inflorescence consists of 1 to 6 sessile spikelets clustered together. From this simple inflorescence can leave 1 or 2 rays also carrying a bundle of spikelets. The inflorescence is very variable in size according to the conditions of the environment. It can be reduced to 1 or 2 spikelets only.
Spikelet
The spikelets are cylindrical, lanceolate in shape, pointed at the tip. They are 4 to 12 mm long and 2 to 3 mm wide. They become curved at maturity. The glume is broad, keeled, with almost no ribs and sharp apex. It is golden or brown in color. The glumes are ripe. The ovary has a trifid style.
Fruit
The fruit is a trigonal achene.
