    Description

    Seedling

Cotyledons filiform, very long, 50-100 x 1-2 mm, never straight but arched at the apex, gradually tapering to a petiole, glabrous, long-lasting. Primordial leaves long-petiolate, composed of 5-7 primary segments, themselves divided 1-2 times into linear, apiculate segments with hairy margins. The hypocotyled axis is short and purplish. Plantlet is dark green to glossy green, exhaling a subtle, pleasant, fleeting odor when crumpled.

    Adult plant

Scandix pecten-veneris is an upright annual plant. Stem stiff, ridged, with numerous spreading, then upright, abundantly hairy branches, reaching 40 cm in height. Leaves alternate, 2-3-pinnate, with narrow, acute lobes and a hairy, canaliculate petiole that widens into a long, ciliated sheath, often purple-tinged in winter. Umbels with 1-3 rays, without involucral bracts but with a 5-piece involucellum, white flowers with 5 truncated, unequal petals, with inwardly curved tips. Fruit formed by 2 achenes with 5 equal ribs, topped by a dorsally compressed beak, scabrous on the margins, 5-8 cm long, terminated by persistent styles.

              Ecology

Algeria: Scandix pecten-veneris is a very common messicolous species in all the country's annual crops (winter wheat-cultivated fallow). It has no particular soil preference, growing on both clay and sandy soils.
Iraq: Present in the mountains, on grassy areas among shrubs and trees, in shady areas in oak woods on limestone, in fields in valleys, etc.; hillsides and fields in the upper plain; fields, gardens and ditches in the irrigated alluvial plain; up to altitudes of 700-1100 m (sometimes 1600 m or more).
Morocco: Scandix pecten-veneris is a very common messicolous species, found in winter cereals, pastures, rocky environment and sandy soils from plains to medium mountains with sufficient rainfall, up to 2000 m altitude.

                  Local harmfulness

Algeria: Scandix pecten-veneris is a major weed. It is one of the most damaging messicolous weeds in field crops, as it can colonize practically any ecological environment (a very common species). Moreover, its great adaptation to the agricultural environment and its high seed production give it a very high potential for invading plots (an abundant species whenever it is present).

                    Local control

                    Algeria: Scandix pecten-veneris is controlled in cereal crops with a combination of a false-sowing cultivation method and a pre-emergence herbicide treatment with 2,4-D, dicamba, florasulam + 2,4-D, etc. or a post-emergence herbicide with tribenuron-methyl, iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium + amidosulfuron-sodium + mefenpyr-diethyl, etc.
