The native range of this species is Tropical & S. Africa, W. Indian Ocean, Israel to Arabian Peninsula, India to Taiwan. It is a climbing tuberous geophyte and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It is used as animal food, a poison and a medicine, has environmental uses and for food.
