The native range of this subspecies is Tanzania. It is a climbing shrub and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome.

Brachystegia woodland on grey sandy soil; ± 1100 m
Note
This collection represents a very considerable range extension for the genus, as the remaining taxa in mainland Africa occur around the margins of the Sahara Desert and within the Flora area are restricted to northern Kenya and Uganda.
