LaHave Perennial Sweet Pea (Lathyrus latifolius) Along the south shores of the LA Have River near the bridge in the town of Bridgewater are the finest stand of Perennial Sweet Peas we have ever set eyes on. The flowers are hard not to notice as you drive by. We harvested seeds from this stand in 2020 and have built up a real nice thicket of our own from the seed La Have source. Perennial Sweet Peas are also called Everlasting Peas were introduced to North America in the 1700’s from the Mediterranean region. They have naturalized in many areas and can be considered invasive in some regions. They are a vigorous climber reaching up to 10 feet under ideal conditions although they are happy to sprawl along the ground if left unattended. Flowers are a very attractive rose-pink like a garden pea, borne on segmented winged stems. These are not fragrant like annual sweet peas, needless to say, the bees are still attracted to the blooms which are persistent past several fall frosts. Like all Lathyrus sp. these are also toxic to dogs, cats and horses. Our cows and goats recently pulled a few vines and consumed them after a brief escape. Neither were affected by the toxins, however, there is always risk attached to the consumption since all parts of the plant are an issue.

Planting Instructions: Starting indoors: Scarify seeds by nicking or filing a notch (pre-soaking for 2-3 hours in warm water or a weak solution of Chamomile tea may also increase germination %). - Sow 1/2" deep into cell flats or preferred deep-cell seedling container, 4-5 weeks before planting out. Darkness is required for germination. Keep seedlings cooler after two-leaf stage. Direct seed 6 weeks before last frost. Seedlings can tolerate a light frost.
