Agave filifera (variegated)
It is certainly a special occasion when a plant you have grown for years suddenly decides to turn variegated. This happened to me with Agave filifera, and I have now removed the variegated offsets and planted several of them at the Ruth Bancroft Garden. The particular rosette shown has its variegation concentrated on the left-hand side, but others have the yellow more evenly distributed. There are certainly many fine variegated agaves in cultivation, but it never hurts to have another one!
Agave filifera is found mainly in Mexico’s Sierra Madre Oriental, to the north of Mexico City. It is closely related to Agave schidigera (or Agave filifera subspecies schidigera, as it is now classified), but it has shorter and wider leaves than its cousin, and it is also more prone to clumping.
