Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum 'Mariesii'

Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum 'Mariesii'

Bright white lacecap-like flower clusters cover the tops of the horizontal branches of this doublefile viburnum in April and May. The 'wedding cake' look is quite beautiful as a stand alone specimen, or planted in groups in the spring. This cultivar flowers alongside rhododendrons, and is a wonderful companion to that group of plants. One plant can grow to 10-12 ft tall and 15 ft. wide. The flower clusters appear in two rows, thus the name doublefile. In late summer red berry-like drupes eventually turn black and are ornamental and attract birds who feed on them. The green spring and summer leaves turn reddish purple in the autumn. 'Mariesii' honors Chelsea gardener Charles Maries (1851-1902). Hardy to zone 5.
