Habitats: Found only on the drier half of the isthmus, from Gambia south, but it is never common. Occasionally seen along roads in the Canal area, or in farmland woodlots. Tropical moist forest and premontane moist forest.
Range: Central America - Panama to Mexico.

Grows as a small to medium sized tree and reaches a growth height of 15 to 20 meters. The trunk is irregular and branches already at low height. It belongs to the butterfly flower subfamily due to its white cup-shaped flowers. The pods, which are up to 13 centimeters long, flat and reddish brown, do not open; they contain up to five elongated and dark brown, egg-shaped and flattened seeds.

The wood is used for household utensils, tool and knife handles, as well as musical instruments, chess pieces, sticks and brushes, among other things. It is also highly valued in sculpture and carving. This tree is also threatened.
