William & Mary Adds Mike Henderson to Track and Field/Cross Country Staff

William & Mary interim Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Alex Heacock '09 announced the hiring of Mike Henderson today, to the post of assistant cross country and distance coach.  In addition to helping with the training and development of W&M's distance and middle-distance athletes for both the men's and women's teams, Henderson will also assist with all administrative and recruiting aspects of the Tribe's nationally-recognized program.

"Our coaching staff, team, and I are thrilled to welcome Mike to our program," said Heacock. "In the search process Mike stood out as a candidate with great experience that will help all facets of our program, but also as a guy with a great personality that will work very well with our student-athletes. Not only was he part of a strong, storied program in a rich academic environment at Princeton, but his previous post as a collegiate head coach will serve him and our program very well in this position."

Henderson comes to Williamsburg after four years at Princeton, where he was the Tiger's first-ever Director of Operations.  In that role, he helped Princeton with all non-coaching aspects of the program, including coordinating recruiting, team travel, budgeting, and meet management.  Since 2015, he has also been the co-director of the Green Mountain Cross Country Camp, helping design week-long programs including training programs for top middle- and high-school level runners.

Prior to his time at Princeton, Henderson spent six years at St. Catherine University in Minnesota, serving as both the Head Cross Country and Track and Field coach as well as the Sports Information Director for the women's-only institution.  During his tenure, Henderson coaches the school's first-ever All-American, and established 52 school records across every event area.  His athletes won a pair of MIAC conference titles and 31 all-conference awards, and six earned Academic All-America accolades.

Henderson also spent one year at Cornell College as an assistant coach for both cross country and track teams, helping his charges to three school records and a pair of all-conference honors.  His coaching career began in 2001 with four years as a volunteer assistant at Iowa, helping with all facets of the Hawkeye program.  While Henderson was in Iowa City, the Hawkeyes won the first regional cross country title in school history (2002) and advanced to three NCAA cross country championships.

A team captain at Gustavus Adolphus College, Henderson was a four-time All-MIAC performer and made the conference Academic Honor Roll three times.  He graduated magna cum laude in psychology in 2001, and went on to earn his master's degree in sports psychology from Iowa in 2004.  Henderson now resides in Williamsburg.
