A rare endemic of Venezuela’s coastal range of the Andes in cloud forest at altitudes between 3,500 and 4,800 feet.  This plant is an upright rosette of inch or so wide leaves that has dark wine red leaves, adapted to the deep shade of the high jungle.

The inflorescence is spectacular and unusual, a slender rachis hanging up to and over three feet with well spaced compound branches and red scape bracts.  The ovaries are green and the flowers are white forming long tubes with flaring corollas.  A rarely seen species in cultivation.  We found this plant near Rancho Grande in the mountains of Venezuela in 1975 but have not seen it in the wild since.
