An unusual species that is found from the cloud forests of central Mexico down through Costa Rica at elevations of 4,000 to 7,500 feet. Without a bloom, the plant would be indistinguishable from a Vriesea or Guzmania with green, glabrous leaves. A mesic grower, it is found only in forests with abundant water in the form of rain or fogs and can not withstand drought for very long. The most unique feature is its multiple inflorescences. This species and complanata are the only two Tillandsias with multiple inflorescences. Typically, five paddle shaped spikes of bright orange to red emerge between the leaf axils creating an impressive display. It has blue flowers that are long and tubular. In cultivation this species does best potted in a loose media, kept moist but not wet. Pure water is essential. Cooler conditions are appreciated but not required. Offsets are produced after blooming but “grass offsets” or adventitious offsets appear prior to anthesis.
