Caespitose perennial. Stems 30-70 cm. Leaves 2.5-5 mm broad, scabrid, sometimes pilose above. Spike usually 4-8 cm x 4-7 mm, usually dark purple, with fragile rachis. Glumes 5-10 mm, linear-subulate; those of central spikelet slightly longer than lemma. Lemma of central spikelet 5-7 mm, sessile, glabrous or scabrid towards apex, with short awn 1-5 mm, Fl. 6-8. Wet meadows, damp ground near streams, 1600-3000 m.
