No stranger to tackling stories with a supernatural feel, “Pirates of the Caribbean” scribe Stuart Beattie is set to adapt the fantasy “Daughter of Smoke and Bone” for Universal.
Joe Roth is on board to produce through his Roth Films with Roth Films prexy Palek Patel exec producing.
Based on the book by Laini Taylor, the story follows a young art student who embarks on an unusual family quest where she encounters unexpected ethereal spirits.
“Between Stuart, Joe Roth, and Universal Pictures, we’ve got a team with massive epic flair, and I can’t wait to see what unfolds as we move toward bringing Karou, Akiva, Brimstone, and the world of ‘Daughter of Smoke & Bone’ to the screen,” Taylor said.
Vice president of production Maradith Frenkel and creative executive Sara Scott are overseeing the project for Universal.
The book was a highly sought-after property when it was put on the market last year and with Roth and Beattie now attached, it’s clear Universal views this as a tentpole property with franchise potential.

Beattie, who recently joined his agent at Jeff Berg‘s new agency Resolution, recently penned the script to Lionsgate’s “I, Frankenstein” starring Jai Courtney and Aaron Eckhart, which bows Sept. 13.
