Discovery Channel has tapped producer John Goldwyn to expand the cabler’s scripted programming in a deal that marks the first major programming move by newly appointed Discovery president Rich Ross.
Goldwyn will work with Ross as an exec producer of scripted programming for the cabler, which has only dabbled in narrative programming in the past. Its first miniseries, historical drama “Klondike,” aired in January 2014.
“John is a true visionary, and, over his nearly 30-year career, has demonstrated a proven ability to connect with a diverse range of audiences spanning both across film and television,” Ross said. “He is the perfect creative voice to join a network with such a global reach and important mission.”
Goldwyn has a long resume in film and TV. Most recently he was an exec producer of Fox Broadcasting’s “Gracepoint,” and he was an EP on the long-running Showtime drama “Dexter.” Recent film credits include “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” a remake of a pic originally produced by his grandfather, Samuel Goldwyn Jr.; and the upcoming comedy “Masterminds,” due out in August from Relativity Media.
