Actor Heath Ledger was posthumously awarded a supporting actor Oscar on Feb. 22, 2009, for his portrayal of the Joker in “The Dark Knight.” Ledger died on Jan. 22, 2008 from an overdose of prescription drugs shortly after wrapping his work on the film, which was being edited at the time of his death. He was working on his next film, “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassuss,” when he died, and director Terry Gilliam used actors Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell to play different incarnations of Ledger’s character in order to complete the film.
