Iconic German film and TV executive Jan Mojto is launching a partnership with longstanding friend and UFA head Nico Hofmann that will produce German and European series and films for the international market. They are joined in the unnamed venture by Beta producer Jan Wünschmann. The partnership was announced Wednesday, on the eve of the annual Berlin Film Festival. No projects were disclosed. As CEO of one of the biggest independent producers in Europe, Mojto has produced and financed such seminal TV series as “The Swarm,” “Babylon Berlin” and “Gomorrah,” as well as the Oscar-winning “The Lives of Others” and Oscar-nominated “Never Look Away.” The company has been expanding into all facets of the market of late, as seen in Beta’s Kids & Family division, which formed an alliance with the content powerhouse Carlsen Verlag to produce the likes of 3D animated series “SuperBikes.” Investing back in the industry, Beta Film and Series Mania founded the Seriesmakers initiative to support established feature directors and writers entering the world of serial storytelling. Among Beta’s other highlights, eco-thriller “The Swarm” swept into the Berlinale for its world premiere; the social-technology thriller “Concordia,” from exec producer Frank Doelger (“Game of Thrones”) bowed at Mipcom; and “Estonia,” about a real-life maritime disaster, bowed at TIFF.
