Description:

Amazon Tree Grape, of the family Moraceae, is the best-known of about 50 species of Pourouma found in Central America and tropical South America.

The tree grows wild in the western part of Amazonas, Brazil, and adjacent areas of Ecuador and Peru.

It is characterized by gray bark marked with leaf scars and alternate leaves with long petioles.

The leaves are nearly circular but deeply cleft into obovate oblong-lanceolate lobes.

The tree has a low, dense crown and bears purple, grape-like fruits in clusters with rough skin.

The fruit has white, juicy, and sweet pulp that is easily peeled.

The fruits are edible and are eaten fresh. The fruits are also made into a jam. Some people also make wine from Amazon grapes. The wood is light, coarse and non-durable. It is used only for making charcoal.
