General Information: Cherry of the Rio Grande/Eugenia Involucrata is the evergreen shrub native to Brazil. Rio Grande cherries are simple to grow and require only minimal upkeep to produce strong, fruitful plants. These exotic fruit trees, often known as Huge River Cherry, can be cultivated in containers. It may thrive in open tropical and subtropical environments. Cherry of the Rio Grande is a member of the diverse Myrtaceous family, which consists of 144 genera and roughly 5500 species grouped into 10 clades. Its fruits are a small and delicious cherry-like flavour that ranges in colour from dark red to purple and the skin is thin and conceals meat that is lighter in colour and one to two tiny white seeds. A Cherry of the Rio Grande has a sweet flavour that has been compared to a blend of cherry and plum, with some even claiming it has overtones of banana.

Health Benefits: The fruit possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities. High concentrations of vitamins A and C, and B-complex vitamins, as well as negligible levels of iron, magnesium, and potassium, can be found in the Eugenia species.

Planting and Care

It will grow in most soil types as long as they are well-drained. Best sown as soon as it is ripe in a partially shaded position in a nursery seedbed or in individual containers.

The fruit has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It also contains high amounts of vitamins A and C, B-complex vitamins, as well as a small amount of iron, magnesium and potassium.

Uses/Benefits

Fruit which has thick, fleshy, succulent pulp with a very pleasant, sweet or subacid flavour which is made into jellies. The wood is compact, moderately heavy, elastic, of good natural durability. It is used for making tool handles and other agricultural implements. The wood is also used for making charcoal.
