Latin name: Acmella oleracea
Plant Family: Asteraceae or Compositae
Lifespan: Annual
Origin: Africa and Brazil
Growing: Moist soils in full sun.
Edibility: Also known as “party in your mouth” because of a crazy numbing and prickling sensation reminiscent of pop rocks, but without the sweetness and much more acrid. Apparently a popular ingredient in Amazonian soup dishes. Medicinal: Potent medicinal herb that deserves more research as a systemic antiviral, antifungal and antibiotic. Its most common and wide spread uses is in tooth, throat and gum infections, and I have personally seen this work on an infected tooth that 3 rounds of conventional antibiotics failed to cure. It also has anti-inflammatory, immune enhancing and analgesic properties.
Permaculture Uses: Pollinators love the Dr. Seuss like flower heads , and the plant can make a great low growing annual living mulch. Slugs love the tender young shoots.
