Snow gum in the Brindabella Ranges, ACT
Catalyst: The hardy snow gum

SUBJECTS:  Geography, Science

YEARS:  3–4, 5–6, 7–8, 9–10

Eucalyptus pauciflora lives in Australia's alpine regions and is our country's most cold-tolerant tree.

In this video, researcher Jessica Ward-Jones explains how the snow gums of the Brindabella Ranges in the ACT have developed defences to thrive in a hostile environment of harsh wind, sun and cold. She also outlines a looming threat to the species from the wood-boring longicorn beetle. Plant expert Dr Matthew Brookhouse demonstrates his tree-sampling research and theorises as to why the beetle threat is occuring now.
