About this Item
4to, hardback. This is a reprint of a document originating from the sixteenth century, now recognised as the earliest treatise on Mexican medicinal plants and native remedies in circulation. The book's focus is on the Badianus manuscript, a herb traditionally associated with the pharmacological treatment of diseases. The original text was believed to be written by an Indian physician in Aztec, before its translation into Latin and eventually English. The original manuscript was discovered at the Vatican Library in 1929. This edition includes an introduction and foreword, written by Emily Walcott Emmart and Henry E. Sigerist respectively, in addition to the original text. Extensive annotations and commentary can be found at the book's end, also contributed by Walcott Emmart. This edition includes full-colour illustrations of the varieties of plant, along with an introduction and foreword, respectively contributed by Emily Walcott Emmart and Henry E. Sigerist. Extensive annotations are also contributed by Emmart. The spine is noticeably faded, though text is still bold and legible. There is some minor marking on the dust jacket, most prominently on the top corners of the cover. Inside, the binding is cracked at the bottom, meaning the cover is slightly loose from the spine. Pages are near to perfect, with minimal signs of browning or foxing throughout. Overall very good condition for an item of its age. (See pictures for a clearer idea of the item's faults.) This item is especially heavy, and may incur additional shipping costs, Seller Inventory # 036301
