Thomas Pereira, who has impressed greatly as central defender lately, is happy to have signed a new contract to play another year for the Stavanger side.

Impressed Østenstad

“I’m so happy Viking wants me to go on,” the veteran says to Viking’s website.

The 35-year-old is listed as having played 418 matches since his debut with Viking in 1997, and ranks 7th on the list of players with most matches played for the club. After next season, he will most likely hold the 6th position, currently held by Bjarte Lunde Aaesheim who has played 425 matches.

Director of Viking, Egil Østenstad, is most pleased that Pereira has signed a new contract.

“By stepping up to take responsibility the way he has done as central defender, Thomas has revealed his true character. I can’t wait to see Thomas enter into his 13th season for the Dark Blues in 2009”, he says to Viking’s website.

Aasen also continues

Thor-Arne Aasen has been Viking’s physical trainer since 2004, but will now transfer from the medical staff to the team of coaches.

“During the past few years, I have been more of a medicine man than a physical trainer. In the future, I will focus more on physical training, both with the team as a group and with individual players. This will allow us to put together individual programmes more than we have done in the past. This is an area with a lot of potential for improvement,” he says to Viking’s website.

Østenstad looks forward to seeing Aasen in a new role.

“It will be interesting to see Thor-Arne function in a pure training position in the time to come. I believe that will strengthen the staff surrounding our a-team,” he says.
