Meet the Queer, Plus-Size Male Model Who's Blowing Up on Social Media

Dexter Mayfield is a name you need to know. He's a dancer, model, and all-around role model. He's also plus-size, which makes the fact that he's making it as a dancer and model even more phenomenal, given the stringent beauty standards folks in the industry are held to. In an interview quoted on Mic, he talks about his first fashion show in 2015, saying, "I was pure nerves. Beyond nervous." However, his nerves paid off, and he's become a viral sensation since then, and his walk speaks for itself.

He also spoke in the interview about how being a plus-size man in the industry is ground-breaking, as when we think of plus-size models, it's typically women who come to mind. He said, "...[W]omen have had that platform, and a few of my plus sisters in drag have been able to get that platform, but no one with a male aesthetic has had that opportunity. At the last minute, Marco [the show’s designer] looked at me and said: ‘Dexter, I brought you into this show for a reason. Do you. Be yourself. Don’t worry about what anyone thinks. Go out and shine and be the person that you are.’” He's been shining since then, and you can see clear evidence of that on his Instagram and Twitter feeds, and in all the videos he's a part of.

Mayfield frequently accompanies his (gorgeous) photos with the hashtag #effyourbeautystandards, as well as other fun, body positive captions, like "🎤Show me somethin' natural like ABS with some stretch marks🎤."
