Viñoly’s delayed ‘golden banana’ gets huge glass facade

Rafael Viñoly’s long-awaited £26 million Colchester Arts Centre is nearing external completion following the installation of a 40 tonne glass facade

The 11m tall by 24m wide glazed entrance inclines by 15 degrees outwards and rotates 5 degrees about its vertical axis. The facade has been developed by specialist contractor FA Firman with Malishev Wilson Engineers.

The 3,200m² building, which has suffered three years of delays and costs overruns because of a major client-contractor dispute, is due to open in September 2011.
