If you only ever buy two or three Alliums, this must be one of them. Sculptural flower heads, initially greenish purple, are gradually transformed as they are pollenated into metallic silvery-violet coloured spheres about 8” (20cm) across, all borne on quite stocky stems. The round melon sized heads naturally complement the purples of rampant geraniums or the spikier silvery blues of Lavender. Buff coloured seed heads follow. Plant them 8+” (20cm) apart in sunny well drained soils in borders or even rough grass, they will also grow in a degree of shade, but will be taller when grown in more shade.

RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Allium cristophii has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit because it has proved to be reliable in appropriate conditions and a good performing plant.

Planting Instructions

To avoid excessive overlap and crowding, plant the Allium cristophii bulbs about 8" (20 cm) apart and 3-4" (8-10 cm) deep in sunny well drained soils and try to include purple or grey in the surrounding planting for added effect. Planted amongst other plants the dry stems and the seedheads that they support last longer and are less easily pulled from the ground in high winds - this also hides their untidy leaves.
