David Renwick’s interest in writing began as a child, when, fascinated with comics such as Green Lantern and The Flash, he began to draw and produce speech bubbles for his own comic strips.

He was also an avid reader of novels featuring Sherlock Holmes, Jennings and Billy Bunter.

After a spell working on school magazines, Renwick thought that to get into writing he would work as a journalist on the Luton News, but he soon found it was less about writing and more about putting a foot in doorways to get a story.

To relieve the boredom, Renwick sent comedy sketches to broadcasters, including one to BBC producer David Hatch, which became the basis of a series starring a certain David Jason. Sticking with the Luton News, Renwick became a regular contributor to Week Ending, where he met long-time writing partner Andrew Marshall.

After a long period of submitting sketches, David broke into television with Whoops Apocalypse and Hot Metal, but it was his first solo project that sealed his success.

In 1989 One Foot in the Grave hit our screens. Its dark humour and grumpy leading character, Victor Meldew, were not an instant hit - it wasn’t till the first and second series were repeated that the public latched onto the show.

Now exclamations of "I don’t believe it!" are commonplace and One Foot in the Grave has recently been voted one of the nation’s top ten sitcoms.

In 1997 Jonathan Creek hit our screens - a project that Renwick says was in part inspired by his childhood. As a boy, his father would take him every year to the Magic Circle Festival, to see such great illusionists as David Nixon.

David Renwick has also written scripts for Agatha Christie’s Poirot series, starring David Suchet as the Belgian detective.
