The first Maß went down quickly with the Regensburg sausages, potato salad and rotisserie chicken at the Augustiner-Keller in Munich (a couple bus or tram stops from the Hbf). As we were leaving shorting due to a big storm coming, we fetched another Maß this time to share. That went down so quickly we fetched another.

Poured properly with a huge head, the bier was tasty, smooth and high desireable. Pouring from a wooden keg no doubt helped!

Pours a hazy, orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and muddled citrus, tropical hops, with a sharp, boozy aroma as well. Taste is a decent balance of light biscuity malt and fruity, juicy hops, with muddled citrus and tropical notes of mango and grapefruit. Finishes with a medium sweetness and some mango and grapefruit lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

I've been so spoiled with too many excellent TIPAs lately that I almost forgot how difficult this style is to brew for the average brewery. I had my worries, as IPAs are not Pühaste's strongest suit, but this displays all the hallmark pitfalls of the style, with an overt sweetness, sharp, boozy aftertaste and overripe, muddled hops. It's drinkable enough, really , with some juicy citrus and tropical notes coming through, but they are not well-defined and that sharp, boozy aftertaste is not too pleasant.

coffee golden ale, love blonde types with coffee, wish they didnt serve it in a plastic cup at the brewery, but its nice beer and the coffee is dominant but not overly roasty which makes it modern, and its well supported by some grain sweetness, its low acid, and the flavor is fresh and distinctive, notes of hazelnut, honey, and toffee to the beans, nicely extracted and infused into here, an otherwise basic but perhaps slightly malty take on the style, seems well built for the java, and this overall is quite good. just a bit of color from the coffee addition, nice rich golden tone, near clear but not perfectly, and with a short but lasting white head, not quite an inch tall, good carbonation through the whole drink. the coffee is nutty for sure and stays away from dark chocolate and bitter depth, it plays more raisin and tobacco and brown sugar, and really goes great with the grain in here, a cold brew process seems likely, as the texture of the beer isnt broken down at all by the coffee. smooth and medium bodied, not as light as the pale coffee lagers of course, and i like the length this runs with, faint smoke and even dried cherry notes as it sits a bit. good carbonation, and as good at ambient temperature as it is ice cold. quality coffee on display here, good recipe, good execution. this place was great!

this appears to be a brand in its own right, perhaps just contracted out of stillfire, didnt get the details, but its solid, everyday lager for hot weather, which makes a lot of sense in a place like georgia, where refreshment value is a key attribute for a beer to have, and this one definitely brings it. blonde and simple, bubbly and dry, but not watery or thin or too cheap tasting, which is a fine line to walk in this style, simplicity here in a good way, just a crackery pale barley base, some minerals to the water this was created with, and an only there when i go looking for it balancing hop on the back end, really not much to it, and there doesnt need to be. no corn or anything to me, not sweet even in the middle, and cleaner than a lot of its peers with a fast finish, maybe a little doughy pils malt type thing in the center and as it warms, but really it stays tight and easy the whole time, handled spicy food just fine, and is very repeatable. not sure what the cans cost since i had it on tap, but if this is a budget play, its better than most from a quality standpoint, and if its not, it still fits in okay. nice for warm georgia spring weather and should be liked by just about anyone who drinks beer...

billed as a hoppy saison, not a bad beer, but also too clean to really hit as a farmhouse, more of a hoppy belgian golden, and i probably would have liked it better in that context. yes it appears to be wheat based, and yeah it has some estery spiciness that could fit as a saison strain, but its got so much of that bubblegum and phenolic character going on that my nose and taste tell me pure belgian yeast run warm. the hops add a lot to this too, juicy and citrus forward, pretty complimentary and only a little bit bitter. there is an orange hue to this but it ends up not really being indicative of this being malty, it still tastes pale, has some minerality, and just a bit of late sweetness, nothing out of place really just a shade richer looking than anticipated. the hops bring orange and candied lemon to the aroma and flavor while the yeast brings green apple, poached pear, and sauvignon blanc notes, white florals as it warms. flavorful and actually pretty solid, but i wish the yeast was either more complex or toned down a little bit, even with all the hops it approaches dominant, and more bubbles would make it sing too. they could have done a little better here i think, but its a fun offering that hits right for this time of year.

This beer looks pitch black until you hold it to the light, then it looks a dark amber color. The head is tan colored, and has good lacing.
Very strong, and pleasing mint aroma.
Taste - the flavor is mostly mint in nature. There is also hints of chocolate that show through. The flavor is fairly sweet, but not over the top sweet.
Body feels pretty full and smooth for a 5.4% beer.

I’ve had 2 beers so far from the Out Of Order series, and I enjoyed them more than I was expecting to at first. Sure they’re a bit sweet for the style but still fun. I’m guessing this one will be the same case, especially given that it’s cotton candy, just pure sugar. Let’s crack it open and see what it has to offer

Pours an opaque pinkish red with a finger of creamy pinkish white head that quickly fades to a ring and leaves minimal lacing

The nose is very candy forward, but I’m not sure I’d call it cotton candy if I didn’t know. I’m picking up on aromas of twizzlers, lemon zest, doughy malt, strawberry lifesavers, vanilla creme, and orange juice

There’s much more cotton candy to it in taste. It’s a bit much but it’s still solid. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting strawberry jolly ranchers, cotton candy, lemon zest, vanilla ice cream, doughy malt, light orange juice, and blue raspberry candy. The swallow brings notes of cherry jolly ranchers, cotton candy, lemon zest, vanilla creme, strawberry ice cream, and light raspberry

A medium body pairs with gentle tingling carbonation, resulting in a slick beer. Finishes a tad sticky but not too much

This one is very sweet but it’s still pretty good despite that. Definitely fun and worth a try

a style we dont see enough of anymore, and while maybe not their best beer i had while i was in, i enjoyed it, if partially just for the nostalgia factor, back in the day i was a freak for these, now they dont come around often. this one has a little murk to it, pours more brown than black, and the head dissipates pretty quickly from the shaker pint they serve it in at the source. definitely not as dark as expected, and that is true in aroma and flavor as well, the bitterness definitely all comes from the hops, and while there is some roast to this, its subtle, and overall the malt profile lands more in the toasted and chocolate range, fully compatible with the hops no doubt, but not as deep and bold as i think it could be. there is a layer of smoke and tobacco too, mild but there, and thats where this one gets a little more complex. the hops are a tad one dimensional to me, bruising pine intensity with high alpha bitterness, pretty consistent through the whole drink and as it warms. some woodiness, some decent body for its color, not hurting for that, and a modest carbonation that lets this unfold at its own pace. faintly green, nice and bitter, spruce and gin to me, lightly dank, cocoa powder at the end, could use just a bit of cleaning up, but its a nice throwback overall.

Pours a hazy, orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and stone fruit, tropical and citrus hops, with notes of peach, passion fruit and grapefruit. Taste is an excellent balance of light biscuity malt and fruity, juicy, slightly floral and herbal hops, with stone fruit, tropical and citrus notes of peach, apricot, passion fruit, mango, grapefruit and tangerine. Finishes with a light bitterness and some peach, passion fruit and grapefruit lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

Although this very much is a NEIPA of the fruit salad variation, lacking any bitter, dank or resinous notes, it's certainly rather juicy, with the Nectaron standing out particularly with its bright peach and passion fruit character. Unfortunately, that makes it a bit hard to identify where the NHZ 106 hops come in here. There are some soft floral, herbal accents that could be attributed to it, but the strong Nectaron presence sure makes it hard to identify fruit characteristics. Overall this makes for an enjoyable NEIPA with bright and juicy hops, that is just a tad too sweet and one-dimensional for my personal taste though.

Canned 4/23/24 (2 weeks ago)

Appearance: Pours a completely hazy (10% clarity) medium golden-orange color with a strong white head. SRM of 7. (4.00)

Aroma: Strong and dank aromas of orange, green herbs, dank herbs, some melon underneath. (4.00)

Flavor: Strong flavors of dankness upfront. After it fades lends to some sweet orange, OJ, and grapefruit. Some green melon evolves underneath. Mildly sweet. Dankness lingers. (4.00)

Feel: Lighter to medium bodied, appropriate carbonation. Finishes clean, smooth, with a lingering dankness. (4.00)

Overall: This is a NEIPA in collab with Weldwerks in Colorado. Has some resinous and lots of dankness here. The dankness coming right out of the glass. It tames a bit as it sets. Evolves into more orange, some stonefruit, and smooth green melon, while keeping the lingering dankness. The flavors improve a bit as the dankness fades. I'm not a big fan of the herbal and dank NEIPAs as sometimes those flavors fit better in the West-Coast profile. Fortunately for this one it fades quickly and actually a pretty nice IPA once the dankness fades. (Rating: 3.88)

This is going to be the average of 2 bottles, and of course, they were very different. Godspeed.

Pours a lighter color than usual Black Tuesday, this one comes in, "browner". Tolls don't pay themselves. Doesn't make much of a head, in either form, this beer was, say, unattractive. The aroma hit those bourbon meets grapes end game. One was significantly more bitter than the other. Both were good at displaying the grapes. Roastiness subsides in the nose compared to the base beer.

The taste can be a nice blend of wine and beer as advertised. One the downside, it can also produce a huge hit of both bitterness and booziness in both the taste and mouthfeel. Overcarbonated on the bad side, nice and low coming closer to wine like carb on the good end. I learned that from my three year old. Heavy amount of dark fruit, cigar, ash. Lesser amounts of roasted malt and bourbon barrel.

Its difficult to distinguish between Vindictive variants and Winefication at times. No need for a nervous breakdown though, even if its a good song.

very solid irish dry stout here, underrated here on BA for sure, and among the best beers we had when we visited if not hands down my favorite, a near textbook example of the style, robust on the dark grain but supremely drinkable too with the lower alcohol, smoothed all out from what must have been a nitro pour, so creamy! matte black in the glass, tidy and polished looking, with a nice foamy inch of suds with great retention. the aroma here has light smoke, decent bitterness, definite coffee character, and an almost woody weight to it, i can smell the irish ale yeast too, old worldy and really adding a lot to this, dry and fast to me too though, mineral forward and earthy, dry as they go, bready, clean. flavor is similar, hearty and sturdy, its a stout after all, but its so quick too, bitterness lingers slightly, this is creamy, but its got a briskness. bold, dark cocoa, espresso, dark bread, light brine type mineral composition, some protein, some slickness, very good and very well refined. i like the body and the palate overall, and think this deserves more credit than it appears to be getting. a really classic take on a style that seems less popular in the states than ever. a shame, but this is a great one, definitely have a pint when you visit these guys!

16oz can pours out a rich, dark black color with a large mocha-colored cap of foam. The entire kitchen was immediately permeated with the smell of syrup-coated pancakes, which is good or bad depending on your perspective. BUT it ended up being good for me, this wasn't a cloying syrupy mess of a beer, instead the coffee really shines on the palate with a nice dark bitterness, along with accompanying impressions of dark cacao nibs and simple whispers of maple syrup. As it warms there is a touch of dark fruit note on both the palate and nose, but this thing is really all about the maple syrup (aroma) and coffee (taste). Rich medium body, semi-sticky and coating. I loved it. Swings a bit above its less than 8% weight, and its very cool to have this decadent of a nose with a palate that doesn't leave you with diabetes...

16oz can pours with caramel-highlights and an ample head of tight-bubbled khaki lace. The nose smacks you with sweetness and decadence...wow, wasn't expecting it to be this strong with chocolate and coconut candy, this is nuts...the palate is just as sweet, rich and cloying with strong coconut flavors and accompanying raisins, dates, nuts, chocolate, caramel, hazelnut, and a desserty sweetness and vanilla booze. The palate on this is hugely reminiscent of Crater Lake Hazelnut Espresso Vodka, like exactly the same...my mind and palate are experiencing a ton of nostalgia right now.

A really nice, sweet, decadent offering, but too cloying and not enough traditional brown ale characteristics for me. Couldn't finish the 16oz can myself, and I was really stoked to try this one. Still - I'm sure this accomplished what Mother Earth was going for.

Stoked to try this one, the original is looked at as one of the best NWIPA options out there, though it isn't my favorite overall. Double dry-hopping will only improve this, correct? 16oz can pours out a honey-like gold color with moderate haze, no particulates, and a fluffy off-white head that rises to three fingers. Hoppy nose for sure, there are elements of a bready sweetness there but overall this is mostly a strong floral, somewhat resiny and piney nose, with impressions of grapefruit, citrus pith, generic tropical fruit, and a bit of dankness. The palate lines up with this, there is enough of a malt base that it is detectable here, along with lots of sweet candied orange, floral honey, fresh flowers, some fresh grass, pine, grapefruit, just a really pleasant somewhat old-school experience. Medium bodied, nice present bitterness, refreshing, not overly dry but definitely inviting.

A winner.

I’ve only had one somewhat hoppy beer from pFriem so far, but I was rather impressed with it. This is definitely gonna be more hop forward than the APA I had, so I’m excited to see how aggressive they get with it. Let’s crack it open and find out what it’s all about

Pours a slightly cloudy pale yellow with 2 fingers of soapy white head that slowly fades to a thin cap and leaves minimal lacing

It’s a bit bland in the nose, but what’s here is nice. I’m picking up on aromas of bready malt, grassy hops, weed, lime zest, underripe cantaloupe, kiwi, and light tangerine

It has some more punch to it in taste which is much appreciated. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting kiwi, juicy strawberry, weedy hops, crackery malt, overripe cantaloupe, orange zest, grassy, and lime zest. The swallow brings notes of bready malt, weedy hops, pthy grapefruit, kiwi, underripe cantaloupe, white pepper, lime zest, and light strawberry

A light medium body pairs with moderate carbonation, resulting in a crisp beer. Finishes mostly dry and refreshing

This isn’t anything amazing but it’s definitely solid

tasty session pale here, not skimping on the hops at all, and i dig the name! a nice pint for a warm spring day in their beer garden at the brewery, a wicked space. this is in some sense old school to me, in that the hop varietals present as higher alpha, northwestern types, with some bitter citrus and even gin notes, while its also got a bit more grain to it than is trendy right now, not malty per se, not even all that rich in color, but its not yellow, its light crystal malt toned, and it has just a bit of toffee richness set against the hop intensity, a fine level of balance but definitely significant structure for a session beer. significant bitterness too, which i appreciate, not enough of these bring that back end punch, but this certainly does. it smells just off from fully fresh but the flavor is better. there is some oily character to the hops that lingers on the tongue after each pull, and this seemed to love salty and richer foods, so great with the mix of appetizers we launched into here (quality food at this place too!). i think i expected and wanted this to be a little brighter, its off from perfect clarity and refinement, the carbonation sags slightly, and it really isnt anything special, except for scratching the itch for something wet and hoppy. its not all that sessionable given all that, but i like the boldness of the hops, the timeless approach to balance, and the way it performed with the food...

i guess i didnt realize this is a rotating series that always features almond and marshmallow and vanilla and then some combination of fruits, pretty cool concept and base beer, and i love that the almond can be fully appreciated, super cool touch in a style that often runs samey, this stands apart because of it. deep ruby red color with high saturation and a short fizzy head from the draft that is almost just as red, a little dense but really bright looking, impressively vibrant in terms of color! the nose and taste are impressive, bold as heck and super modern, but way way better than most of its peers, like to an almost shocking degree. yes this is sweet, yes its over fruited by just about any standard, and yeah, its probably puree, but its also really good. the vanilla isnt too much, the marshmallow does add a cool textural element, and the fruits go so well together, mouthwatering tart cherry in front of the others, but homemade jam vibes to the strawberry and a nice piquant thing from the raspberries too, which seems like the most natural of them. the souring here is clean and not overdone, lemony and enhancing, cutting some of the pulpy heft this has and brightening it. i like the freshness it pops with, i love the natural almond woven through it, and i dont mind how intense it all tastes, its unique and delicious. this is, as they say, what the kids are drinking these days, but its a top performer in a somewhat annoying style space and it was hard to not be impressed sipping on it. two tides is absolutely awesome!

Crystal clear golden body with a white head and rungs of lacing. Smelling banana, bready yeast, clove, citrus zest, floral hops, and mineral water in that order of intensity. Taste adds some bubble gum and bright grain, fruits are now more esters than anything, leans german but has plenty of belgian influence, especially on the finish. Medium-light bodied yeast and malt are smooth and thin with grainy finish

Clear medium brown pour with darker edges, khaki head, bands periodically of lacing. Smells of earthy hops atop biscuit, toasted caramel malt, mild grain and slight minerals. Taste again has toasted caramel as a base but now with toast, sweeter malt with biscuit, grainy leaning yeast and finishes with significant earth hops. Feel is more bitter for style, clearly a new world take, but well made with yeast and malt being nice satisfying each sip with sneaky depth all together

Clear golden body with a white head. Grassy and floral hops dot the nose with pilsner malt and mildly grainy yeast. Taste is more of a bready yeast, hops are stronger here, especially the grassy tones, but the malt backbone and finishing yeast is spot on with hints of mineral water and hay. Feel is hoppy and grainy, very crisp with higher carbonation, but hops just crush the finish here in cutting fashion. Feel like less hops presence here would unlock a great beer from a good one

Dark reddish brown appearance with a tan head. Earthy yeast with sweet malt tones in a simpler nose. Blind-tasted/rated.
Bought from Scotsdales Garden Centre Trumpington Cambridge. 500ml bottle. BB: 28/10/2024 Ouch £3.29
L- Mid-gold, clear as a glacial stream. Pours with a 3mm snow-white foam cap. Some fresh rising CO2 from the glass's nucleation point.
S- Grainy, overall mild.
T- Grainy, minor roasty malt note, some hoppy-dryness that I'm surprised to find leaves a dry lick across my palate.
F- My thinking this is that this is a lager, with some characterful facets and dryer hopping than typical. Carbonation in the mouth is good.
O- Notably hoppy-dry and on the lighter side hints to this being a good summer or lunch beer. Well put together. At 4.2% and as a pale beer there is limited scope to 'shoot the lights out', but it does a good job within that latitude.
The labelling suggests it is making the most of this beer having previously been brewed in Cambridgeshire (now in Suffolk). This kind of 'cute over-localised' marketing, eye-catching for tourists etc can be a warning sign of dolled up 2nd class offering. Here they do a good enough job. The price is premium though, esp for the modest ABV%. My benchmark is a regular fav tipple the supremely brewed Abbot Reserve £2.65/500. This is say 25% more; I'm unlikely to buy it from Scottsdales again.

Half liter bottle picked up at a huge getrankemarkt in northern Stuttgart labeled best by 12.06.24. Seems like another regional brewer that snatched up some recipes from smaller breweries in the area that closed and kept or slightly changed the names. Listed here as a Helles but the backside of the label states Exportbier, which makes sense based on the ABV%. Pretty standard and traditional Export, which is basically a strong Helles. Grainy, slightly sweet, easy drinking. Wouldn’t mind seeing this on draft but wouldn’t seek it out moving forward as there are too many other Exports.

Poured a dark, almost black body with minimal head and no lace. The aroma is slightly meaty and has some good smokiness (which makes me wonder if this is a rauchbier in some manner). Medium body , slightly filling, has a meaty, smokey taste that is dry but there's enough malts in the background to provide a touch of sweetness and balance. The finish is easy and smokey which makes the beer enjoyable.

Quite foggy dark amber, nearing acorn brown, with an overactively massive off-white head that billows out of the bottle before filling the glass to entirety.

It's otherwise a fairly beautiful balance of malt, phenols, and esters, kind of like a mix between dubbel and tripel. Honey biscuit with a hint of clove meets touches of pear and plum before an amazingly vanishing finish after the super lifting airy foam in the middle.

Quenchingly drinkable yet old world mature.

Partially foggy or chill hazed amber-gold with a short and bumpy off-white head.

The nose is like cider, and even more so like floral white wine. It's quite beautiful.

Taste is more tart and almost like apricot lambic with a little more prick of acid before it comes back to a very apple juicy exhale. It at times even has a hint of oaky funk.

Quite effervescent, but then vanishing on the finish.

MAY 2024.
On tap. It's the most drunk and famous Italian craft beer in the world.
Produced with Pils and Caramunich malts and with nioìbile hops of German origin such as Hallertauer Magnum, Hallertauer Saaz and Hallertau Hersbrucker. then during fermentation the creative passage conceived by Agostino Arioli takes place, i.e. the dry hopping of only Saaz hops.
When exported to the USA, they do the dry hopping upon arrival of the tanks.
It's a light, golden and transparent Pils, topped with a soft cap of foam, as per tradition.
the herbaceous scent mixes with those of bread and cereals.
In your mouth you find a beer with perfect carbonation, an underlying lightness that allows the flavors to emerge clearly.
Extremely drinkable, typical hints of a pils (bread crust, light honeyed hint), with a finish that makes you lick your lips with that evident herbaceous and at the same time absolutely in balance with the rest, brought by the dry hopping of Saaz which closes the drunk with a dry but tasty bitterness (herbaceous, in fact).

355 mL can purchased from the brewery a long time ago; dated Sep 12 2022 and served barely chilled.

Pours utterly black, stirring up a quarter-inch layer of bubbly, dark brown-coloured suds that disintegrates within seconds. A thin collar lives on, managing to deposit some lace after a couple of sips; looks alright, but it turns out that pecans aren't great for head retention. Fairly orthodox aroma compared to the last couple of OoD variants I tried, but it's still complex and inviting. I'm getting dark chocolate, coffee & roasted grains, with hints of fudge, treacle, pecan, honey, whisky/booze, wine and wood.

A truly decadent-tasting stout - rich dark chocolate, fudge, toffee and molasses flavours come through initially, joined by roasted grains, honey, banana & grape-like dark fruitiness. Plenty of coffee roastiness by mid-sip, with whisky, wood, vanilla and pecan dominating the back end; boozy-sweet, tooth-rotting aftertaste with lingering chocolate, honey and coffee bitterness. Full-bodied, with a viscous mouthfeel that feels slick, oily and coats the tongue with each sip; minimal carbonation. I love this, but the sugars and abv make for a slow quaff.

Final Grade: 4.31, an A grade. Origin of Darkness (Burial) is thick and delicious, but it's one of those beers that makes you want to brush your teeth afterwards. My only real complaint, other than its mundane appearance, is that this stout is unrelentingly saccharine - but even that is mostly forgivable in context. That is to say, of *course* a nearly 11% Madeira whisky barrel-aged stout with pecans is going to be sweet, there's no away around that, but this one almost crosses the line... not quite, but almost. A fantastic beer with which to sate your sweet tooth - highly recommended to imperial stout lovers, and a brew I'd love to drink again some time.
