The Sydney Harbor Bridge is one of Australia's most famous landmarks along with the Opera House. The bridge crosses Port Jackson between the Sydney central business district and the North Shore.
A bridge had been planned for a long time. After many years of debate about whether to build a tunnel or a bridge and several delays, construction of the bridge only started in 1924. It was the company Dorman Long and Co Ltd of Middlesbrough from England that had the winning proposal. J.J.C. Bradfield was the chief engineer for the bridge. 52,800 tonnes of steel were used and 1,400 workers worked on the bridge. The bridge opened in 1932.
The Sydney Harbor Bridge is 1,149 meters long and has a span of 503 metres, making it the world's eighth largest arch bridge. The bridge currently has 8 lanes and 2 railway lines. The bridge is 49 meters wide, which made it the world's widest bridge from the time it opened until the Port Mann Bridge opened in Vancouver, Canada in 2012
Since 1998 it has been possible to climb over the bridge through BridgeClimb.
