Overview

Named after legendary Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna, this extremely track-focused hypercar is McLaren's most calculated masterpiece. Its unmistakable appearance (see prehistoric shark) is dominated by numerous air intakes and aerodynamic addendum that create incredible downforce. Combine that with the extensive use of lightweight carbon fiber throughout and an insanely powerful engine and you have the recipe for a vehicle that goes like a rocket and turns like a ballerina. That, ladies and gentlemen, merely scratches the surface of the awe-inspiring 2019 McLaren Senna.

Engines, Ride, and Handling

Since we first laid eyes on the Senna, we knew its light weight and huge power were destined for greatness—as if its legendary nameplate weren't proof enough. A mid-mounted twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 sends 789 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The version we tested blasted from zero to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds and reached 100 mph in 5.1 ticks. It clipped the quarter-mile in 10.1 seconds at 147 mph. Its thunderous performance numbers were matched by deafening noise levels that showcase this machine's purity of purpose. With more than 1.5 tons—McLaren claims up to 1763 pounds—of downforce on tap and advanced chassis tuning that is highlighted by chest-compressing brakes and supernatural steering feel, the Senna checks boxes that had to be added. While this $960,000 beast is street-legal, it was built to be driven almost exclusively on the racetrack. We had the rare opportunity to do just that with a prototype version, and we're confident that experience would've made the car's namesake proud.

Interior and Technology

Swing open the Senna's dihedral doors and its carbon-fiber structure is clearly visible on the dash and doors. The material extends to the customizable bucket seats and mingles with faux suede or optional leather all over the straightforward cabin. The airy interior provides excellent visibility with narrow roof pillars and unique see-through sections on the door panels. The traditional switchgear—electronic door release, window buttons, and push-button start—hang from the ceiling. The steering wheel is free of buttons and the digital gauge cluster folds up or down depending on the display mode. An 8.0-inch touchscreen is centrally located and includes functions for audio, media, navigation, and more. While the 2019 Senna skips common driver-assistance technology found on common cars, it is available with a three-camera system that can be used to record record-breaking lap times.
