Paying significantly more than the starting price of a McLaren 720S for a special edition Holden may sound absurd, but that’s exactly what someone is willing to do in Australia.

A rare 2017 HSV GTSR Maloo W1 is currently up for auction through Lloyds Online and at the time of writing, had already attracted a highest bid of AU$675,000 – and that’s before you factor in the 7.5 percent auction premium. So, what do you get for your money?

Prior to Holden wrapping up production in Australia, HSV released 275 examples of the insane GTSR W1 sedan. These cars are extremely desirable among local car enthusiasts, but the Maloo ute takes things one step further. It is understood that just four examples were ever built, exclusively for those in HSV’s inner circle.

HSV investigated the possibility of producing the GTSR W1 Maloo itself but decided the business case didn’t make sense. Walkinshaw Performance then stepped in and took standard GTSR Maloo models and outfitted them with the W1 modifications.

Powering the super ute is a 6.2-liter supercharged LS9 V8 with 636 hp and 601 lb-ft (815 Nm) of torque, all of which is funneled through the rear wheels courtesy of a six-speed Tremec manual transmission. This particular example is painted in ‘Light My Fire’ orange and has only been driven 681 km (423 miles).
