Why this petition matters

Wearing jewellery is a way for students to express their personal style and identity. Allowing students to wear jewellery at school can encourage creativity and self-expression, which can lead to increased self-confidence and positive self-image.

Some types of jewellery, such as religious symbols or cultural accessories, may hold significant cultural or religious meaning for students. By allowing students to wear these items, schools can show respect for students' cultural and religious beliefs.

Unless the jewellery is causing a disruption to the learning environment or poses a safety hazard, there is little reason to prohibit students from wearing it. If a student's jewellery is causing a distraction or disrupting the learning environment, then the school can address that specific issue without banning all jewellery.

In many workplaces, employees are allowed to wear jewellery as long as it is not excessive or unsafe (such as rings, multiple ear piercings, and nose piercings). Allowing students to wear jewellery in a school setting can help prepare them for the expectations and norms of the professional world.

There is little evidence to suggest that allowing students to wear jewellery has a negative impact on academic performance or behaviour. Therefore, there is no compelling reason to ban jewellery at school.
