A man was rushed to hospital following a fight at a pub in Houghton-le-Spring.

Police received a report of two people fighting at The White Lion shortly before 3pm on Sunday afternoon. Paramedics and officers attended the premises on Newbottle Street.

Two men were found to have suffered injuries consistent with having been assaulted. One of them was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) said they sent one ambulance to the scene after being called just before 3pm. A spokesperson said: "We received a call at 2.59pm yesterday afternoon to reports of a person injured at the White Lion Hotel, Newbottle Street, Houghton Le Spring. We dispatched one ambulance crew, and took one patient to hospital for further treatment."

Northumbria Police is currently investigating the incident. A spokesperson for the force said: "Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the disturbance. Later on Sunday afternoon, The White Lion announced that they were closed. They posted on Facebook: "Due to unforeseen circumstances we have made the decision to close today." They chose not to comment about the incident when contacted by Chronicle Live.
