Need for Speed II  1997

The second game in the popular Need for Speed series. The realism and attention to detail is still extremely high, but the game has more of an arcade feel than the original. Only the Pacific Spirit track is available in the original shareware demo. Compatibility mode may be necessary in modern Windows to avoid an out of memory error. There are 7 tracks and 9 drivable cars in this game, with only one car and track playable in the shareware version.

About 6 months after the original release, EA released Need for Speed II: Special Edition, which added one new track, four new cars, three bonus cars, and used the Glide API for hardware acceleration. Need for Speed II: SE's graphics are clearly improved under Glide, adding car reflections, weather, and improved fog. The Special Edition demo will not run without a Glide-compatible graphics card or a Glide wrapper. There are 10 tracks and 16 drivable cars in this game, with only one car and track playable in the shareware version.
