Andres Deja was inducted as A Disney Legend in 2015, after his staggering array of work on so many Disney animated films. His very first assignment for Disney was doing character visual development for The Black Cauldron alongside Tim Burton. His work on this was so good, he was moved in animation on this film. This piece is some of the first work ever done by Mr. Deja at the Walt Disney Studios. A phenomenal piece depicting a beautiful character development concept drawing of the Horned King with Princess Eilonwy. Rendered in detailed graphite on 16 field 3 peghole animation paper. Andreas, who has brought to life heroes, is known for his rich portraits of villainy, having animated Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, Jafar in Aladdin, and Scar in The Lion King. “Villains are the most fun to animate,” he says. “It’s fine to have a villain who beats people up and is ruthless, but the more important thing for me is whether or not they are interesting. The villains who have full personalities are the ones you remember.” In 2006, Andreas was awarded the prestigious Winsor McCay Award for his contributions to the art of animation.

Princess Eilonwy appears in four of the five novels in the series, Lloyd Alexander’s The Chronicles of Prydain, as well as Disney’s 1985 animated film adaptation The Black Cauldron. Eilonwy is a member of the Royal House of Llyr, and the women in her line are formidable enchantresses, including her mother, Angharad, and grandmother Regat. She has inherited this characteristic, most readily visible in her manipulation of a magical item she calls her “bauble”, a small golden sphere that glows with magical light when activated by her willpower. Eilonwy’s father, Geraint, was a commoner with whom her mother fell in love.

PROVENANCE: The art was purchased from the US leading auction house for collectibles who was consigned to sell several pieces of Tim Burton and Disney Studio art.
