Description

Back in the early ebay days, I discovered cartoonists like McClure, skilled "realistic" illustrators and comics storytellers, who were long-forgotten by the time I tuned into comics. I snapped up several pieces of original art, which sold at reasonable prices (still does, as far as I know).

McClure, I understand, specialized in nautical illustrations, so in this example he gets to show off that talent, but what sticks with me from this one is the body language, expressions, gestures. Particularly that arms-out-thrown celebratory stride of Miss Lee in panel 1.

There's a lot of visual storytelling in the interaction between the two characters. Panel 1: Annie and Miss Lee walking toward each other, both in excited poses, arms out to, one expects, embrace over the news Miss Lee is bringing. Panel 2: Miss Lee has continued on past Annie, so it seems maybe they haven't hugged. Miss Lee's expression is happy and maybe a little dreamy, looking off into the distance as she speaks to Annie behind her back. Annie's expression betrays a little concern or skepticism, eyebrows raised, lips pursed. Panel 3: Now we are with Annie, watching Miss Lee's receding back as she boards the ship. Annie's face shows mild but clear worry, and Zero the dog looks even more perturbed. Miss Lee's purse, one of the few details in the scene, is held in her outstretched arm in panel 1, and clutched tightly by her side in panel 3, to underscore the financial theme of the strip. A wonderful little 3-act (3 panel) drama that was nestled in the daily paper comics section nearly 64 years ago!

Vintage age for comic strips when the quality of writing and art came from some of the best talents. They can create characters and scenes that can capture your attention with just a limited space and have you look forward to a next installment in the story.
