The microSD™ card slot is found inside the waterproof battery compartment, protecting your additional topographical or marine maps from loss or damage. Expandable map storage
Garmin gets you started with a preloaded basic basemap that containing select North American cities, major highways and interstates, and large rivers and lakes. You get a blank 64 MB microSD card for optional map detail storage, and you can purchase additional preloaded microSD cards with extra MapSource® detail, from inland lakes to city streets and more. The 60Cx is ideal for outdoor mapping use, but highway mapping and navigation requires further microSD cards or software from Garmin.

Product Research

Features
Supplied Software

Features

Product Overview: The Garmin GPSMAP 60Cx is a 7.5-ounce, hand-held, 12-parallel-channel GPS receiver and personal navigator with a built-in quad helix antenna. The built-in SiRFstar III processor calculates and provides automatic routing, turn-by-turn directions and audio alerts along city streets or trails. It continually tracks and uses up to 12 satellites to compute and update your position every second. It has a built-in basemap that can route you via interstates and major highways. With the supplied CD-ROM software, you can create and edit waypoints and routes on your computer, and download them into the unit.

WAAS Capability: This unit is compatible with WAAS (Wide-Area Augmentation System), a system of satellites and ground stations that provide GPS signal corrections, giving you position accuracy of 1-2 meters horizontally and 2-3 meters vertically, 95 percent of the time.

Display: The unit features a 1.5" x 2.2" (2.6" diagonally), 160 x 240 pixel, high-resolution, 256-color transflective TFT LCD. The display is fully readable in direct sunlight. For nighttime viewing, you can turn on the display's backlight. The backlighting can be adjusted for intensity and duration as desired.

Buttons and Rocker Keypad: The GPSMAP 60Cx features dedicated "Find", "Mark", "Quit", "Enter", "Menu", "Page", "(Zoom) Out", and "(Zoom) In" buttons, plus the 4-way rocker pad for navigating through the menus.

Basemap: The GPSMAP 60Cx has a built-in Americas autoroute basemap with a marine point database (January 2001) with automatic routing capabilities, including highways, exits, and tide data.

Internal/External Memory: The basemap is loaded into the unit's internal flash memory. Optional MapSource maps can be downloaded onto the supplied 64MB microSD card. Maps are also available on microSD cards, which can be inserted into the unit's card slot.

Compatible MapSource Data: The GPSMAP 60Cx can accept data from multiple optional MapSource products, including applications for driving, hiking, freshwater and saltwater navigation. Additional maps are available on CD-ROM (for loading into the unit from your PC) and microSD cards (for direct plug-in to the unit).

Geocache Locations: Geocaches are special hidden treasures using GPS coordinates posted on the Internet by those hiding the cache. The GPSMAP 60Cx lets you separate geocache locations from other waypoints with a special symbol to give it extra significance. Once you have entered the location of the geocache, the unit can automatically route you to the location. When the cache is found, an automatic entry into the unit's calendar is made. If you have a list of geocache locations, you can create a route from one geocache to another.

Find Function: With the Find function, you can search for waypoints, geocaches, cities, Interstate exits, recent finds, and marine points. Additional search items appear, such as All Points of Interest, Addresses, Food, Fuel, Lodging, Shopping, and intersections, when optional MapSource and BlueChart data is loaded into the unit. You can also find locations by name when you enter the name of the location into the unit.

Routing: When selecting options for routing, you can choose how the unit calculates the "follow road" routes:
  • Prompted: The unit will prompt you to select a preference before the route is calculated.
  • Faster Time: The unit will select routes that are faster to drive, although they may be longer in distance.
  • Shorter Distance: The unit will select routes that are shorter in distance, but may take more time to drive.

Off Road Routes: Instead of choosing the shortest or fastest routes, you may also choose an off-road route. The Direction Finder page is added to the main page sequence, and always points toward your destination. As long as the bearing pointer points straight up, you are heading in the direction of your destination.

Waypoints: You can manually mark any map position as a "waypoint" for later recall. Waypoints can include anything such as fishing spots, trailheads, or the location of your parked car. Up to 1000 waypoints can be marked and stored on this unit.

Tracks: The GPSMAP 60Cx creates an "electronic bread crumb" trail, or track, to show a specific route you have traveled. The track log contains information about points along the path, including time, location, and elevation at each point. The "TracBack" feature allows you to retrace your path without having to manually mark waypoints along the way. Up to 20 tracks of 500 waypoints each can be saved to allow you to retrace your steps in either direction at another time.

Setup Menu: You can customize the GPSMAP 60Cx to your personal preferences for the following features:

  • System: select GPS type, WAAS enabled/disabled, battery type, text language, external power off options, and proximity alarms on/off
  • Display: select color scheme for daytime and nighttime (10 choices each), backlight timeout and level
  • Interface: select data format options for USB and serial interfaces

  • Geocache: select icons used for geocaches to show found and unfound locations, and whether to make entry in calendar
  • Marine: select depth for anchor drag alarm, distance for off-course alarm, and depth for deep water and shallow water alarms
  • Time: select 12- or 24-hour clock, time zone, UTC offset and daylight saving time options
  • Units: select the units of measurement for position format, map datum, distance/speed, elevation/vertical speed, depth, and temperature
  • Heading: select type of heading display and North reference options

Demo Mode: When indoors, you can activate the built-in Demo mode and practice using the unit. This shuts off the GPS receiver so it's not searching for satellites.

Power Requirements: The GPSMAP 60Cx operates on 2 "AA" batteries (not supplied). Alkaline batteries are recommended, and provide up to 18 hours of battery life with typical use. With battery saving, you can get up approximately up to 30 hours. You can also use rechargeable Ni-MH batteries, but they typically display less capacity than disposable batteries. When using the unit in below freezing temperatures, lithium batteries are recommended. Use of the backlight shortens battery life. Stored data, such as waypoints or unit settings, are not lost when changing batteries.

Antenna: The unit has a built-in quad helix antenna for best satellite reception. Remote GPS antennas, such as the optional Garmin GA 29, GA 27C, or GA 25MCX, can be connected to the back of the unit via an MCX connection.

Waterproof: The GPSMAP 60Cx is waterproof to IPX7 standards, and can withstand immersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes.
