A SHORT HISTORY OF CROWBOROUGH

Throughout the town’s history, several derivations of its name have been recorded. These include Crohbergh, Crowbergh, Croweborowghe, Crowbarrow and Crowboro. The name is thought to refer to the yellow flowers that grew on Crowborough Hill. The town grew significantly with the arrival of the railway in 1868 and was marketed as a health resort in the 19th century due to its relatively high altitude.
