Now the Crown 'will recreate moment Kate wore risqué see-through dress that won over William at student fashion show' in final series of Netflix drama

  • The final series documenting 1997 to 2005 will be released later this year

The Crown is set to recreate the moment Kate Middleton won over Prince William at a student fashion show where she donned a risqué see-through dress as she strutted down the runway.

Throughout the final series of the popular Netflix drama Ed McVey, 22, and Meg Bellamy, 20, will play the Prince and Princess of Wales in the early days of their relationship while studying at St Andrews.

The pair recreated the memorable night 20-year-old Kate confidently strutted in front of her peers barely there dress on the night of March 27, 2002. Prince William, who paid £200 for a table just inches away from the runway, reportedly sat watching his future wife open-mouthed.

The lace slip Kate wore that night cost just £30 to make but is credited with kickstarting her relationship with William. The dress later sold for a whopping £78,000.

Netflix producers showed pictures of Meg recreating the evening at the Edinburgh TV Festival last night, when they discussed how the upcoming series - covering 1997 to 2005 - will take a look at the heir's early relationship with Kate.

The filmmakers also shed light on the stark difference Meg's role is to her previous job where she was working at Legoland in Windsor, the Sun reported

They told the audience: 'Meg was at Legoland in Windsor, working in a costume I think - as a chicken - but she's far from that now.'

Throughout the evening, Netflix bosses also showed clips of William and Kate staring at each other longingly in a university library.

Behind the scenes clips, shared on TikTok by actual students at the university, previously showed Meg dressed in a navy jacket, khaki skirt and brown knee-high boots while her love interest is preppy in a checked jumper and jeans.

The scene opens with Kate gazing at her love interest before they then walk into one of the university buildings.

As they leave campus, the actress playing Kate acknowledges William - who is passing past them - with a smile.

After walking through an old gate, William then turns around and gazes at Kate - which prompted their live audience to gasp from where they were watching.

In another recreation, it showed Prince Harry, played by Luther Ford, almost shooting someone with a riffle.

Creator of the show Peter Morgan said promoting the new series this week: 'The minute you see William and Harry on screen it's just electric.'

During the evening the producers also confirmed that the fatal car crash of Princess Diana, played by Elizabeth Debicki, would appear in the upcoming series, despite a considerable amount of backlash.

Last Netflix was blasted for its 'odious' filming of scenes recreating Diana's death in a Paris tunnel in 1997.

The streaming service insisted Diana's death in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel would not be recreated but an insider revealed her final days and hours would be.

Royal biographer, William Shawcross, branded the series 'odious' and 'deliberately hurtful'.

Speaking of the sensitivity around portraying the Princess' death, producers at Edinburgh TV Festival stressed that it would be handled with 'enormous sensitivity', the paper reported.

Executive Producer Suzanne Mackie said: 'There was no question that we would be, firstly, meticulous in our research and read and listen, and of course secondly and most importantly is to be sensitive.

'There was very, very careful, long, long conversations about how we do it, and the audience will judge it in the end. But I think it's been delicately, thoughtfully recreated.'

Ms Mackie went on to add that Debicki 'was so, so thoughtful and considerate and loved Diana so there was a huge amount of respect' when the scenes were recreated.

Ahead of the release in Autumn, the streaming giant has now launched a glitzy publicity campaign to distract from the criticism over Princess Diana's death.

Earlier this month, the three young actors playing Kate, Harry and William were pictured together promoting the high-end jewellery brand Cartier at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. They also all attended Netflix’s party with British Vogue in May. Ed and Luther also went to Paris Fashion Week together.

However, Elizabeth Debicki, who plays Diana in the upcoming series, has been nowhere to be seen.

A source said: ‘The Diana death scenes will be awful and prompt huge controversy around the world so you can see what Netflix is doing here, trying to overcompensate for that by giving the viewers the glory days of Kate, William and Harry, and not just on screen but off too.

‘They are being put out there a lot, especially when you consider they haven’t even been on the television yet.’
