Danny John-Jules has promised Red Dwarf fans that Series XI will go back to its early series roots.

Ahead of the show's return in 2016, the Cat actor told Digital Spy: "It's going back to the old school, the four guys and loads of banter. That's what we want."

Red Dwarf series 11 - everything you need to know: Return date, plot details and more

That may sound more like Top Gear than Red Dwarf, but it's still got us excited.

He continued: "We did the first read-through. I got a sore throat, as my voice had to go two octaves for Cat's voice. I hadn't done that for four years!

"Basically, it's going back to have my teeth cast, and my head cast. I can't tell you why I had to have my head cast, but you'll be very pleased when you see it!"

Danny also teased a potential future storyline that may see Cat finally find love and get laid. Even Rimmer has seen more action.

"The Cat's a virgin! Let's just say that gets explored. The whole thing about his standing in the world of reproduction is definitely touched on."

He added that filming two series back-to-back was a relief, saying: "I think that was a conscious decision. We've been trying to get the same guys in the same room for the last three years now, and because of Craig doing Corrie and me doing Death in Paradise, and Chris and Bobby doing their shows, it's very difficult. Now it's happened and it was very wild!"
