Bad Boys legend Martin Lawrence is back in the TV game with Demascus.

Last seen on the small screen eight years ago in sitcom Partners, Deadline reports he'll be playing a character named Uncle Forty – an "irascible" man desperate to be acknowledged as the family patriarch.

The story itself centers on 33-year-old Demascus (Grey's Anatomy star Okieriete Onaodowan), who embarks on a journey of self-discovery by using a piece of innovative technology that enables him to experience different versions of his life.

Six episodes long, Demascus has been described as a "comedic, genre-fluid, coming-of-age" tale, "with a reality-bending premise that explores the gulf between Black male perspectives, while also attempting to answer: 'Who am I?'"

Created by Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm, it also features Janet Hubert (The Fresh Prince of Bel Air), Caleb Eberhardt (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Shakira Ja'nai Paye (Black-ish).

But back to Lawrence's bread and butter: the Bad Boys franchise.

In light of co-lead Will Smith's infamous Oscars slap, Sony chairman Tom Rothman recently denied claims that a fourth instalment had been put on ice.

"That movie's been in development and still is.

"There weren't any brakes to pump because the car wasn't moving. That was a very unfortunate thing that happened, and I don't think it's really my place to comment, except to say that I've known Will Smith for many years, and I know him to be a good person."

Rothman added: "That was an example of a very good person having a very bad moment, in front of the world. I believe his apology and regret is genuine, and I believe in forgiveness and redemption."

Demascus airs on AMC in the US next year.
