Owain Yeoman has been cast as a prominent DC Comics villain in the upcoming CBS series Supergirl.

The former Mentalist actor will appear in Arrow and The Flash producer Greg Berlanti's new DC series as Vartox, Warner Bros Television confirmed to TheWrap.

Vartox is an alien criminal who seeks a war with Supergirl while in hiding on earth. DC Comics introduced Vartox as an opponent for Superman.

The character bears an overt resemblance to Sean Connery's moustachioed Zardoz character Zed.

Yeoman's role in Supergirl is not expected to interfere with his commitment to play the traitorous General Benedict Arnold in Turn: Washington's Spies.

Supergirl producers have already hinted at possible crossovers with fellow DC shows Arrow and The Flash, in addition to featuring major characters from the comic books.

Mehcad Brooks has been cast as Superman's pal Jimmy Olsen, who in this series will be a love interest for Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist).

Original Supergirl actress Helen Slater will have a mystery role in the CBS show, as will Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman actor Dean Cain.

CBS is expected to premiere Supergirl during the fall 2015 television season.
