Call of Duty co-creator Jason West has parted company with Respawn Entertainment, the independent company he helped found after leaving Infinity Ward.

The game designer is said to have been absent from work for some time and is retiring due to family reasons, according to Polygon.

West formed Respawn Entertainment with Vince Zampella in 2010 after the pair left Infinity Ward amid a firestorm of controversy, during which they were accused of corporate espionage and employee mistreatment.

West and Zampella later sued publisher Activision claiming unfair dismissal, breach of contract and unpaid royalties, settling out of court last summer.

Respawn Entertainment, which recently announced plans to show its first game at this year's E3, is yet to officially comment on West's departure.
