Stranger Things is back on our screens (cheers Netflix) and is already proving to be the addictive binge-watch of July 2019. But there's something else to come out of the Stranger Things phenomenon, other than nail biting depictions of the Upside Down. Not only are the cast-members, such as Mille Bobby Brown and Natalia Dyer proving to be fashion muses IRL, but their on-screen counterparts are also having an effect on the fashion world.
Max and Eleven even partake in an extended shopping montage in the mall, showcasing plenty of what the decade had to offer in terms of teenager-coveted threads.
The 80s high school is fast becoming the fashion world's most recent, slightly left-field reference. The decade has been characterised by many tropes which are now staples of our current-day wardrobes - the strong shoulder for one and leaning towards feathers and a ruffle for a night out, is another. But the hallways of the American high school during that era - with all of its stone-washed denim, pulled up sports socks and luridly patterned short sleeved shirts - is not something we imagined rearing its head again in the mainstream of 2019 and beyond.
The Couture Shows
When you think of couture, you expect to see plenty of brocade, diamonds, silks and even the odd ruff and bustle. Mostly, you don't expect to see is The Cure and yet here we have a Robert Smith-inspired hair style making its way down the catwalk at Givenchy.
Dior's Haute Couture show had distinct vibes of Madonna's 'Like A Virgin' with its short 80s prom frocks and fishnets. But also a bit of 'Papa Don't Preach' thrown in with a slogan tee that begged a question that everyone's surely pondering at this juncture.
Marc Cain in Berlin
Moving swiftly through couture and resort collections and into Spring Summer 2020, the Marc Cain show in Berlin - named 'Colour In Motion' - was the most perfect example of the high street hallways making their way into high end threads.
Strutting along the 56m long zebra-striped catwalk, models such as Caroline Winberg, Kris Gottschalk and Kenya Kinski-Jones debuted a line of coloured suits, pulled up socks and distinctly 80s-inspired patterns (note that black and pink chevron-print skirt).
Soft neon shades combined with striking boldly patterned prints. Checks, stripes, florals and geometry all making a comeback for SS19.
Resort Collections
Versace's Cruise 2020 collection is perhaps the most literal take on the 80s American high school, with its mottled and tie dye denims, batwing-style sleeves and styling that included bold, turquoise eyeshadow.
Miu Miu's 'Jockey Club' resort show for the same season was also on an 80s flex, with colourful leather short-suits and sports socks peeping out of the top of heels and trainers.
