Aviation and historical enthusiasts have a rare opportunity to get up close with an iconic RAF bomber thanks to a special event at London Southend Airport this weekend.

The small Essex airport is hosting a 'Vulcan Classic Jets Day' on Sunday (August 20). The highlight of the day will be the opportunity to explore the Abro Vulcan XL426's remarkable features from up close, including the opportunity to step inside the aircraft's cockpit.

Alongside the Vulcan, visitors can explore a fascinating collection of weaponry once carried by the aircraft during its service with the RAF. Notably, there will be examples of the 1,000 lb high explosive bomb, like those dropped on Port Stanley airfield during the 1982 Falklands Conflict.

Visitors can explore the aircraft's cockpit for an additional fee. The immersive experience is said to "provide a glimpse into the intricate controls and systems that guided this historic aircraft during its operational days".

Southend Airport is hosting the renowned Red Arrows, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (including Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane) and Typhoon ahead of their involvement in the Eastbourne Airshow. Visitors to the airport on Sunday will have a front-row seat for the taking off and landing of the aircrafts.

As well as the impressive aircraft, there will also be live music from Chelmsford Brass Band, a display of military vehicles, and refreshment stalls.

Admission is priced at £8 for adults with free entry for U16s. Cockpit tours are available at an additional £8 per person. Gates open at 10am with the last admission at 4pm.
