Encephalartos relictus

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Extinct in nature.

CULTIVATION:

  • Full sun.
  • Regular watering.
  • Can sustain light frost.

PROPAGATION:

  • Propagated only from suckers, as only male plants exist.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • Swaziland on the north eastern border near Siteki.
  • Only one cluster of plants was found and is now extinct in nature.

STEM:

  • Aerial, erect stem.
  • Stem can attain a length of 1.5 meters to 2 meters with a diameter of up to 50 cm.
  • The stem apex is covered with a large amount of golden wool that remain on the crown of the plant.

LEAVES:

  • Leaves have a dark green colour on the upper side with a lighter green colour on the lower side.
  • The leaves are initially covered with white silvery hair that can give the plant a silvery grey look.
  • The hair is soon lost when leaves mature.
  • Leaflets are 20 cm – 25 cm long, with a width of 15 mm – 18 mm.
  • The margins are entire and the leaflets are strongly concave transversely.

CONES:
  • Male cones are bright green becoming yellowish green with maturity.
